A recent announcement indicated that magnetic motors can be used to cool refrigerators. In the method, a gadolinium-based warms and cools off in response to application of a magnetic field. The gadolinium rotating wheel is the only moving part.

Why might this be a breakthrough?

Question 2

A car drives down one hill and up another maintaining constant speed (the road is a V-shape with a rounded bottom).

What can be said of the acceleration of the car along the left side of the V halfway down? What can be said of the acceleration of the car along the right side of the V halfway up? Where on the track is the acceleration the greatest? Explain.

Answer to Question 1

Moving parts involve friction. Elimination of friction reduces waste of energy. It
remains to be seen whether this is a breakthrough.

Answer to Question 2

If that car has the same speed along the left side of the V, it must have an
acceleration of zero (because there is no change in speed or direction). Likewise, along the
straight right side of the V, it also has an acceleration of zero.
If the speed never changes, then the only place there can be an acceleration is at the bottom,
where the direction is changing. A change in direction means a change in the velocity.

Though Candida and Aspergillus species are the most common fungal pathogens causing invasive fungal disease in the immunocompromised, infections due to previously uncommon hyaline and dematiaceous filamentous fungi are occurring more often today. Rare fungal infections, once accurately diagnosed, may require surgical debridement, immunotherapy, and newer antifungals used singly or in combination with older antifungals, on a case-by-case basis.

Barbituric acid, the base material of barbiturates, was first synthesized in 1863 by Adolph von Bayer. His company later went on to synthesize aspirin for the first time, and Bayer aspirin is still a popular brand today.

When blood is deoxygenated and flowing back to the heart through the veins, it is dark reddish-blue in color. Blood in the arteries that is oxygenated and flowing out to the body is bright red. Whereas arterial blood comes out in spurts, venous blood flows.

A good example of polar molecules can be understood when trying to make a cake. If water and oil are required, they will not mix together. If you put them into a measuring cup, the oil will rise to the top while the water remains on the bottom.

Once thought to have neurofibromatosis, Joseph Merrick (also known as "the elephant man") is now, in retrospect, thought by clinical experts to have had Proteus syndrome. This endocrine disease causes continued and abnormal growth of the bones, muscles, skin, and so on and can become completely debilitating with severe deformities occurring anywhere on the body.
