Answer to Question 1

This is correct. Some work is transformed into thermal energy through the action
of the frictional forces. The work input must be the work output plus whatever frictional
work is done.

Answer to Question 2

The ability of business to sell energy to the utilities at the avoided cost (the
greatest price utilities pay) certainly provided a business incentive for sales of energy to
utilities, This did help spread renewable energy because some businessmen calculated that
buying windmills and selling the energy to the utilities would be remunerative.
