Explain how increasing the efficiency of cars could help contain greenhouse warming.

What will be an ideal response?

Question 2

Suppose reaction A involves the breaking of bonds and 75 J of energy, reaction B involves the breaking of bonds and 40 J of energy, and reaction C involves the making of bonds and 125 J of energy.

What is the overall A + B + C reaction energy? Is this an exothermic or an endothermic reaction? Explain.

Answer to Question 1

More cars being more efficient would mean smaller use of fossil fuels overall,
reducing emissions of CO2 . Of course, if people just drive more ...

Answer to Question 2

In making bonds, the total energy release was 125 J. This is more than the energy
supplied to break bonds, 75 J + 40 J = 115 J. Overall in this reaction, bonds are made and
net energy is supplied by the chemical system to the outside. This is an exothermic reaction,
because energy of 10 J = 125 J - 115 J can be extracted from the system when the
reaction occurs.

When Gabriel Fahrenheit invented the first mercury thermometer, he called "zero degrees" the lowest temperature he was able to attain with a mixture of ice and salt. For the upper point of his scale, he used 96°, which he measured as normal human body temperature (we know it to be 98.6° today because of more accurate thermometers).

For about 100 years, scientists thought that peptic ulcers were caused by stress, spicy food, and alcohol. Later, researchers added stomach acid to the list of causes and began treating ulcers with antacids. Now it is known that peptic ulcers are predominantly caused by Helicobacter pylori, a spiral-shaped bacterium that normally exist in the stomach.
