Question 2

Examine the muon decay by weak interaction and choose the correct statement about the lepton conservation numbers Le, L, and L .

a. L = Le = L = 0 for both sides of the equation
  b. L = -1, Le = -1, L = 0 for both sides of the equation
  c. L = 1 for the left side, Le = 1 for the right side, and L = 0 for both sides of the equation
  d. L = -1, Le = 0, L = 0 for both sides of the equation
  e. L = 0, Le = -1, L = 0 for both sides of the equation

Answer to Question 1

e.
There is no quantum number governing the behavior of the gluon because the gluon is a gauge boson, or force carrier.

Answer to Question 2

The lepton number for each of the families , electron, and must be conserved in any reaction. Accordingly, the number must be the same on either side of this equation. In this case, an anti-muon and anti-muon neutrino are both -1, and both of the electron family cancel each other on the right side of the equation. The tau number is zero for both sides.
d.

Answer to Question 3

e.

Did you know?

Cyanide works by making the human body unable to use oxygen.

Did you know?

Certain rare plants containing cyanide include apricot pits and a type of potato called cassava. Fortunately, only chronic or massive ingestion of any of these plants can lead to serious poisoning.

All adults should have their cholesterol levels checked once every 5 years. During 2009–2010, 69.4% of Americans age 20 and older reported having their cholesterol checked within the last five years.

Did you know?

Hippocrates noted that blood separates into four differently colored liquids when removed from the body and examined: a pure red liquid mixed with white liquid material with a yellow-colored froth at the top and a black substance that settles underneath; he named these the four humors (for blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile).
