How do you think citrus growers in Florida might use heat of fusion to protect against frost damage?

If the calorimeter is not well insulated, how will heat from the air in the laboratory affect the experimental value for the latent heat of fusion of ice? Explain.

Answer to Question 1

Water sprayed on the citrus fruit requires that heat be removed from the water to
change phase to ice. Eighty calories of heat must be removed per gram. This heat
transfer warms to air temperature and this helps to keep the crop from freezing.

Answer to Question 2

The calculated value for the heat of fusion of ice will be less because part of the heat
transferred to melt the ice and raise the temperature of the melted ice water will be
supplied from the air in the laboratory; therefore, not as much heat will come from
the water and calorimeter cup. This will make the calculated value low.
