Answer to Question 1

The work done by a constant force acting on an object is the product of the
magnitude of the force (or component of force) and the parallel distance through
which the object moves while the force is applied.

Answer to Question 2

Since all relevant forces are in the y-plane, by convention all upward forces are +
(positive) and all downward forces are  (negative).
