Answer to Question 1

Answer: First of all, warm air is associated with high atmospheric pressure and cold air is associated with low atmospheric pressure. As air rises it cools by expansion. As air sinks it warms by compression. As air sinks and warms, its capacity for holding water vapor increases. Because more water vapor molecules are required to saturate a warmer air parcel, sinking air inhibits the formation of clouds. On the other hand, as rising air cools, its capacity for holding water vapor decreases. Because less water vapor is required to saturate the colder air, rising air enhances cloud formation. Cloudy skies are thus due to rising (cooling) air and low pressure, while clear skies may be the result of sinking (warming) air and high pressure.

When Gabriel Fahrenheit invented the first mercury thermometer, he called "zero degrees" the lowest temperature he was able to attain with a mixture of ice and salt. For the upper point of his scale, he used 96°, which he measured as normal human body temperature (we know it to be 98.6° today because of more accurate thermometers).
