The conservative force on an object moving in one dimension is given by F(x) = (2.00 N/m)x + (1.00 N/m3)x3.

  (a) What is the change in potential energy when the object moves from x = 1.00 m to x = 2.00 m?
  (b) What is the change in kinetic energy when the object moves from x = 1.00 m to x = 2.00 m

Answer to Question 1

(a) -6.75 J
(b) 6.75 J

Answer to Question 2

In a solid material, the attractive forces are strong enough that the atoms or molecules moves only slightly about relatively fixed positions, often in an array known as a crystal lattice. In a liquid, the atoms or molecules are moving more rapidly, or the forces between them are weaker, so that they are sufficiently free to pass around one another. In a gas, the forces are so weak, or the speed so high, that the molecules do not even stay close together. They move rapidly every which way, filling any container and occasionally colliding with one another.
