In family systems theory, a scapegoat is
 
  a. a person or group outside the system that is held accountable for all of the systems discomforts. This explains such things as racism and homophobia.
  b. an ancestral black sheep believed by the family to be the genetic source of all bad behavior by family members.
  c. a family or system member who takes responsibility for all of the other members.
  d. a family or system member who deflects discomfort from the system by cracking jokes or otherwise entertaining the group.
  e. a member of the system or family who is blamed for the discomforts of the other family or system members.
