Answer to Question 1

The advantages of addressing the issues between mutually hostile members, when they agree to do so, are that they have a real opportunity to problem solve in a safe setting, become more accepting of others who are different than they are, and may build group cohesion. The disadvantages are that members may still strongly disagree on issues and make the group time a battleground. They may also disrupt the work of other members. When they can accept the differences between each other and agree to disagree, then they should be given some time in group to work through their issues. Where this is not possible and the members remain hostile, one or both members may need to be asked to leave the group.
