Answer to Question 1

A member trying to get the leader may do so because of certain leader behaviors, such as spotlighting members when drawing them out, cutting members off (appropriately or inappropriately), failing to recognize when a member wants to speak or returning to a member after saying you will do so, or allowing too much negative feedback to be given to group members. To prevent this, the leader will need to cut off and draw out members carefully, assume responsibility for what he/she says he/she will do, and attend to members' nonverbal signals in wanting to talk and in giving feedback to others to ensure that members do not feel attacked in session.
