Answer to Question 1

A primary technique a group leader can use to change the pace of a group is his or her voice. By manipulating rate of speech, tone, pitch, and volume, the leader can slow things down, speed them up, re-energize the group, create a more thoughtful atmosphere, etc. (approx. p. 139) Not mentioned in this chapter, but also available are such techniques as changing the format, as in getting members to physically move, or switching to a paper and pencil exercise or pairing members up to discuss a topic, etc. Students may think of these techniques on their own, especially if they have skimmed through the book.
