Answer to Question 1

Identifying allies is important in group leadership so that the leader can call upon these allies in times of need or even in times of crisis. These members are cooperative and helpful, and may be used in a number of capacities to further the group's purpose, such as pairing with an upset member so that the work of the group may continue, getting exercises or discussions started, or role-playing for demonstration purposes. The leadership skill involved is in identifying the member's intentions, how helpful they are, and whether or not they appear to be helpful at first but later work at cross purposes from the leader.
