Answer to Question 1

A leader may evaluate the changes a group has made members' lives by informally asking members what changes they are making as a result of the group, by asking others in the members' lives to complete a form or to comment on their observations of the members outside of group, or by collecting measurable data. In collecting measurable data, the authors recommend determining outcome goals, collecting pre-data related to the outcome goals, focusing the sessions on the outcome goals and giving members time to work on them, tracking progress on a form the leader develops, obtaining permission for others to be involved in evaluating data (if needed), collecting the data using the form created, and following up by collecting post-group evaluation data.

Drug abusers experience the following scenario: The pleasure given by their drug (or drugs) of choice is so strong that it is difficult to eradicate even after years of staying away from the substances involved. Certain triggers may cause a drug abuser to relapse. Research shows that long-term drug abuse results in significant changes in brain function that persist long after an individual stops using drugs. It is most important to realize that the same is true of not just illegal substances but alcohol and tobacco as well.
