 Shared experiences and interactions with cohorts and other individuals outside the nuclear family
 Opportunity to express purpose and goals of life
 Reinforcement of personal status and identity
 Participation in activities associated with work that is viewed as a necessity in the give and take of daily life.
 Implications:
o Counselors may need to help clients create a structure for their day. For example, if the client wants to find a new job, the day can be structured on specific job-searching activities (the job search becomes the client's new job).
o The counselor may need to help the client call on or develop a network to provide for shared experiences.
o The counselor helps the client express purpose and goals of life.
o The counselor helps the client redefine identity and personal status.
o The counselor helps the client, possibly through identifying volunteer or charitable opportunities, find ways to participate in the world.
