Like other disabling conditions, visual impairments affect families in ways that are unique to each family, though general reactions can be described. Family characteristics such as degree of support, financial capabilities, expectations for the future, and a variety of interpersonal factors influence how families accommodate a newborn with visual impairments. The severity of the vision loss, age of onset, and support from the community (including medical and support personnel) also influence family reactions.
