Answer to Question 1

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that is typically described as a collection of behavioral symptoms. The extent and severity of those symptoms provide a range of diagnoses referred to as autism spectrum disorders.

  • The federal definition of autism begins: Autism means a developmental disability significantly

affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, generally evident before age
three that adversely affects a childs educational performance. (See page 270, text).

In pervasive developmental disorders, only a few of the characteristics of autism are present, or the characteristics are present in a very mild form.
Children with Aspergers syndrome may exhibit many of the social and behavioral characteristics of people with autism, but without the marked delays in language and cognitive development.
