Answer to Question 1

Functional curricula emphasize the relationship of what is being taught to real-world expectations. For example, teaching basic arithmetic facts until they are memorized is less directly relevant to students with severe disabilities than is teaching how to give a cashier the appropriate money needed to obtain a bus pass. Functional curricula can include each of the following dimensions: employment, independent living, recreation, and social life.

Answer to Question 2

Students should mention IDEA, which mandates Individualized Transition Plans (ITPs) for persons with severe disabilities.
Transition planning for individuals with severe and profound disabilities requires considerable communication and collaboration between secondary educators and the work/living/rec-reational community. Students can provide examples of such collaboration in their answers. Community-based work experience and use of self-management procedures also should be mentioned.
