Teachers may need to break learning tasks down into smaller parts as follows:

 Teaching should take place in small groups.
 Teach one concept or skill at a time.
 Provide and explicitly teach strategies or steps for learning.
 Provide ample opportunity for practice.
 Use prompts to encourage correct responding.
 Provide brief periods of instruction for students with a limited attention span.
 Encourage generalization by allowing students to practice life skills in the context in which they are actually used, such as going shopping, visiting a neighbor, or eating in a restaurant.
 Focus instruction on appropriate life skills.
 Involve parents to continue the learning process when the student is at home.
