The physical effects of alcohol include alterations of facial features (such as widely spaced eyes, large ears, small chin and small head size). The child may also be small due to slower cell growth and protein synthesis caused by alcohol. Cognitive effects include a greater risk of learning disabilities or mental retardation.

Nicotinemay result in low birthweight babies.
Thalidomidehas a history of producing birth defects, such as damaged or missing limbs.
Cocainemay result in prematurity and low birthweight babies, but its long-term effects are undetermined.
