 Litigation guaranteeing equal opportunity grew out of the 1954 Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education.
 The civil rights movement grew to include womens rights and rights for people with disabilities.
 Government action, such as President Kennedys Commission on Mental Retardation.

Choices include Nicholas Hobbs (he conducted a project on classification of children); Jean Marc Gaspard Itard (he initially worked with Victor, the wild boy of Aveyron, and tried to educate him); Maria Montessori (she worked with young children systematically); Samuel Gridley Howe (he introduced methods used at Perkins School for the Blind); Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet (he founded the first school for the deaf in the United States).
