Punishment can be positive in several ways, including:
 
  a. making the teacher feel better about maintaining control of the class.
  b. teaching the student to respect the teacher at all costs.
  c. providing information to students about what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior.
  d. convincing other students to ridicule the misbehaving student, reducing his/her bad behavior in the future.
