(1) research studies indicate that a large proportion of student performance is due to
heredity;
(2) although researchers make a strong case for the importance of heredity in giftedness, most agree that environment is also important; and
(3) many gifted individuals are highly motivated to succeed. The motivation of gifted students often is stimulated at an early age by the recognition of talent by parents and friends who go out of their way to obtain special instruction for them and to encourage and nurture their talent. Another strong influence on many gifted individuals is one or more of their teachers.
