(1) The parents of children with autism need an understanding of the nature of autism and how it influences their child's learning patterns and behavior. They also need to understand special education laws and regulations and how to advocate for their child. (2) Parents need to learn how to use specialized teaching strategies to help their child acquire new behaviors.
(3) Parents need to learn effective behavior management strategies to be able to effectively address their child's challenging behaviors.
(4) Siblings can have their lives seriously disrupted and should be part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
(5) Treatment can be time-intensive and expensive and can lead to stress in the family. (6) Mothers tend to carry much of the burden.
(7) Support services should be available for family members who are experiencing stress.
