ANSWER: Answers must specify that there are many causes of intellectual and developmental disabilities and should name several of the following: chromosomal abnormalities, Down syndrome, phenylketonuria, fragile X syndrome, toxic agents, fetal alcohol syndrome, heavy metals, infections, unknown factors, and environmental conditions.
The answer should also state that children with mild intellectual and developmental disabilities are more likely to have unknown or environmental causes for their condition.
