It is the process of acquiring land, converting it to a profit making conclusion. It may involve massive development such as large tract housing developments and shopping malls, but it also includes smaller scale efforts. Today, it includes reclaiming inner city land and buildings to revitalize a blighted community bringing it back from economic collapse.

A Continuing Care Retirement Community is a form of retirement community offering a variety of housing and healthcare options ranging from skilled care to independent living. They are typically not regarded as a form of real estate ownership, although the co-op or condominium models are sometimes used.
