Answer to Question 1

Redirect examination follows cross examination and is conducted by the attorney who did the direct examination. Recross examination follows redirect examination and is conducted by the opposing counsel.

Answer to Question 2

Among other things, to make a verbatim record of a particular case, to function as assistant to a judge, to keep track of exhibits, etc.
