Answer to Question 1

This Act became law in 1994 and then reauthorized three times as late as 2013. It is administered by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Justice. It is considered the most dramatic illustration of legislation bringing the attention of violent family problems. Students can go more into depth on the kinds of violence the law highlights as well as its inclusiveness that now recognizes lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.

Answer to Question 2

The student's response may note that it is important for members of the family law team to be familiar with both of these patterns. Exhibit 14.2 on page 528 provides a list of common characteristics and behaviors of abusers. Paralegal Application 14.1 on pages 517-518 identifies many of the reasons why victims remain in abusive relationships.
