Communications are protected in several other relationships: spouses, doctor and patient, psychotherapist and patient, clergy and penitent, and participants in settlement negotiations. These communications are protected for the same reason as the attorney-client relationshipthere must be the free flow of information without fear of it being disclosed. For example, doctors can better treat the patient when all information is freely shared.
