Answer to Question 1

egal professionals are consciously moving away from the tradition of using masculine pronouns inclusively in legal writing, which is why legal writers should be alert for sexist language. Some of the ways in which gender-neutral language may be substituted for masculine pronouns include:

Words with man or men may use a gender-neutral substitute. For example, workers' compensation may be substituted for workmen's compensation.
se he or she in place of he.
Alternate between the use of masculine and feminine pronouns throughout a document.
Make a noun plural so that a gender-neutral plural noun such as they, their, or them can be used.
Repeat the noun rather than using a pronoun.

Answer to Question 2

Legalese consists of terms that are used by legal professionals but that are unknown to most people outside the legal profession. An example of legalese is voir dire, which means jury selection. The use of legalese should be avoided, especially when communicating with clients and other laypeople. In the voir dire example mentioned,
this could be accomplished by using the term jury selection when writing to the client.
