Allowing silence is an appropriate and respectful response, particularly when
 
  a. the client is resistant to therapy and the practitioner is at a loss with regards to moving the session forward.
  b. the practitioner is having a strong reaction to something that the client said and needs time to process.
  c. the client is expressing strong feelings and needs time to reflect.
