Answer to Question 1

B

Answer to Question 2

A pioneer community invades the bare substrate and begins to alter the environment, creating soil, for example. As a result, the species structure of the ecosystem does not remain constant. In time, the environmental alteration becomes sufficient to allow a new plant community (that could not have survived under the original conditions) to appear and eventually to dominate the original community. The process continues with each succeeding community rendering further changes to the environment. Eventually, communities can reach an equilibrium, the climax community, and stop evolving.
