The atmosphere holds and transports oxygen, water, and carbon dioxide that are necessary for plant and animal life. The greenhouse effect raises the planet's average temperature above the freezing point of water, and heat is distributed across the planet, which minimizes extremes. The ozone layer shields life on Earth from much of the Sun's damaging UV radiation. The atmosphere also causes most meteors to burn up before reaching the surface.
