Answer to Question 1

The creation of the Nunavut territory in 1999 is one of the biggest contributions to native self-determination in the Far North. Empowered in 1993 by the Canadian Native Land Claims Agreement to have a critical voice in the management of land and resources, the Canadian government guaranteed shares of federal royalties from mineral exploration, title to thousands of square miles of traditional Inuit land, hunting and fishing rights, and procurement preference programs that give preference to Inuit-owned contractors.

Answer to Question 2

During the Cold War, the DEW Line (Distant Early Warning system) was a joint U.S.-Canadian project designed to establish radar stations for tracking potential attacking Soviet aircraft and missiles to help protect the United States against the perceived threat of nuclear attack.
