Students should know that the Treaty of Hidalgo, in 1848, ceded present-day New Mexico and Arizona to the United States.

Early Spanish settlements were focused around river valleys where there were favorable conditions for farming. Today, Hispanics live all over the region with the highest population densities closer to the U.S.-Mexico border.
