Petroleum refining is one of the largest secondary sector industries in the Coastal South. The Coastal South has a thriving tourist sector and a large number of military bases.

The area's mild climate and easy access to overseas transportation are the main reasons given in Chapter 10 . The student could also draw from Chapter 9: The Inland South, and mention that since the Civil War, a high proportion of military officers and enlisted personnel have come from the South. The South is also friendly to the culture of the armed services, and southern members of Congress have steered large amounts of dunging for military bases in the South.
