Answer to Question 1

The Coastal South's topography is flat, with poor drainage and heavy rainfall. As a result, there are many swamps, lakes, and coastal marshes that are prone to flooding. The Coastal South is also the most thunderstorm prone region in North America, with lightning strikes killing more than 200 people a year. In addition, some of the most destructive hurricanes in history have struck this region.

Answer to Question 2

As the Inland South has become more integrated into the culture and economy of the broader region, more people have become familiar with destinations such as the Great Smoky Mountains and the Ozarks. In addition, many areas in the Inland South have a low cost of living compared with other parts of the country.
