Answer to Question 1

The region looks homogenous, with patterns of its physical geography appearing organized and predictable, with rectangular fields and linear highway and rail connections making this region look like a giant checkerboard from the air. Small towns appear at fairly regular intervals, and large cities appear less regularly.

Answer to Question 2

The low topography and rich soils of the region, especially when compared to the higher hills and poorer soils of the Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin, are the result of the pressure of millions of years of periodic glaciers.
