The American colony was established in order to extract resources for transformation into finished products and ship them back to Europe. Port cities were developed along major rivers to facilitate the transfer of products shipped from the Eastern interior.

Students should mention a large labor force, ample water and hydroelectric power, and effective transportation by road, rail, and sea.
