Truck farming involves the growing of fresh fruits and vegetables for local markets, so truck farms are often located near urban areas. The dry western part of North America is the center for ranching in the region, since ranching is usually reserved for places too dry to successfully engage in crop production. Cash grain farming happens largely in the Middle West and Great Plains. The large areas of rich grassland soils allow farmers to manage large acreages using very little labor.
