Instead, people emphasize lower social class, the lack of citizenship, or illegal aliens; these descriptions serve as proxies for race. Furthermore, the emphasis is on individuals failing rather than on recognizing patterns of groups being disadvantaged. This leads many White people to declare they are not racist and that they do not know anyone who is racist. It also leads to the mistaken conclusion that more progress has been made toward racial and ethnic equality and even tolerance than has really taken place.
