FEEDBACK: Adult motives cannot be understood by exploring a person's childhood, as Freud believed. The only way to understand adult motives, Allport stressed, is to investigate why people behave as they do today.

FEEDBACK: Allport offered the example of a tree. It is obvious that the tree's development can be traced back to its seed. Yet when the tree is fully grown, the seed is no longer required as a source of nourishment.
