Accuracy in the preparation of purchase orders is important in the product cost control process because the purchase order is the internal document against which delivery invoices will be matched by receiving personnel.

Without a properly prepared purchase order receiving staff will not know which products are to be delivered nor how much of each product is to be delivered. In addition the purchase order includes prices to be paid for products. Without properly prepared purchase orders receiving staff cannot verify that the prices charged for products delivered to the operation are the same prices the operation had intended to pay.
