Answer to Question 1

The purpose of the question is to focus student's attention on the specific characteristics of a food service operation that makes it a successful candidate for franchising. If, for example, a local operation is noted primarily for its location (for example on the beach, on the water, or in the mountains) that restaurant may not be an ideal candidate for franchising because the characteristic that makes the restaurant successful is not easily duplicated. If, however, the restaurant is successful primarily due to a unique menu item or its special decor, that restaurant may well be a good candidate for franchising.
