Answer to Question 1

Productive performance appraisals focus entirely on issues of strengths and weaknesses and the
development of new goals and objectives. Once money becomes part of the discussion, interest
in improvement tends to dissipate. If the team member brings up the question of money during
the appraisal interview, state that this will be discussed later and that now the interview will
concentrate on performance. If the issue of money persists, explain that the interview is bound by
company guidelines and that the chef supervisor does not make the final decision about salary
increases. However, clearly indicate that a recommendation in this area will in large part be
based on the outcome of this current appraisal interview.

Answer to Question 2

Summarize the key points and check for team members' understanding.
Invite them to offer their own summary as well.
 Compare agreed upon points
Team members should have a chance to review their problems and outline any
concerns or work-related problem may have.
