Answer to Question 1

Diversity in training is no longer just about correcting behavior in relation to racial
discrimination and sexual harassment. Training should embrace the diversity of the team and
work to increase the capability of the team through that diversity. Diversity includes everyone. It
is not something that is defined by race or gender. It extends to age, education, lifestyle, sexual
orientation, geographic origin, exempt and nonexempt status, physical abilities, religion, and
where a person lives. There are also subcultures within any one of these categories. Diversity
training and assisting cross-cultural communication can improve cooperation in multinational
work teams. The foundation for training and teamwork in a culturally diverse kitchen is valuing
and appreciating all the differences within the team.

This can be achieved by:
fostering awareness and acceptance of individual differences.
helping team members understand their own feelings and attitudes about
people who are different.
exploring how differences might be tapped as assets in the kitchen.
enhancing relations between people who are different.
finding or inventing ways for each team member to collaborate.
