Answer to Question 1

The use of celebrities and special events is a kind of double-edged sword. While
such tactics may generate publicity on behalf of a particular cause, much of the
public attention remains focused on the celebrity or the event. There is also the
danger of having anything that reflects badly upon a celebrity or event also
reflecting badly on the cause. At best, celebrities and events help to grab the
public's attention. Once that is done, it is up to the message to hold that
attention.

Answer to Question 2

It appears that the company valued victory over complete vindication. It may be
that the company felt any victory was better than none and that fraud would be
easier to prove than libel. Still, this approach left the door open for ABC to claim
that the supermarket chain never legally challenged the veracity of its reporting.
