Would it be ethical for a public relations practitioner, in the employ of a pharmaceutical company, to openly assist a professor in writing a medical-journal article about one of the company's products?

Answer to Question 1

Under the dictates of the Good Publications Practice: Guidelines for
Pharmaceutical Companies, yes, it would be ethical  but, as the guidelines state,
both the role and the payment of the practitioner would have to be acknowledged
within the article. The case study does indicate that some medical-journal editors
and medical researchers might not accept such a relationship.

Answer to Question 2

Individual answers will vary. PRSA's values statement calls for responsible
advocacy and the highest standards of accuracy and truth. Those values support
Catan's decision to resign.
