Realist filmmakers tend to use normal, or standard, lenses to produce a
minimum of distortion. These lenses photograph subjects more or less as they are
perceived by the human eye. Formalist filmmakers often prefer lenses and filters that
intensify given qualities and suppress others

During the big-studio era, most cinematographers believed that the aesthetic
elements of a film should be maximized. Beautiful pictures with beautiful people was
the goal. Today such views are considered rigid and doctrinaire. Sometimes images
are even coarsened if such a technique is considered appropriate to the dramatic
materials
