Research shows that police are much more likely to take formal action if:
 
  a. the crime is serious
  b. the crime has been reported by a victim who is a respected member of the community
  c. if the offender is well known to them
  d. all of the above increase the likelihood of police taking formal action

What are the responsibilities of the three different branches of government (legislative, judicial, and executive) regarding sentencing?

The legislative branch of government defines the range of possible punishment for a given crime. The judicial branch of government has discretion in choosing the specific sentence for the individual criminal. The executive branch of government is responsible for carrying out the actual sentence, including running prisons, pardons, and parole.
